Our son, Matthew, was the first of triplets born 2 months early at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Due to complications of his prematurity, he developed severe physical and developmental limitations. Despite these challenges, Matthew had an infectious happy personality, always tried his best and unfailingly had a quick witted response to someone's comments. He was generous in spirit and gave unconditional love to all he met.
Throughout Matthew's life he fought bravely the challenges of his disabilities and won many battles. Unexpectedly, at age 31, on November 10 2013, Matthew lost the war and was called home to be with the Lord.
In memory of our beloved son, loving brother, awesome uncle, cherished nephew and treasured friend we wanted to continue his legacy of generosity of heart and spirit.
The name Matthew means "Gift of the Lord". He was a precious gift to all who knew and loved him. In Matthew's honor and to continue his legacy, we named this nonprofit Matthew's Gift. We are passing along the gifts of love, charity and comfort.
When we chose the name Matthew's Gift for our nonprofit we discovered our guiding principle was actually in scripture in the book of Matthew.
Matthew 25:35
" For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in..."
Matthew's Gift mission is working to provide food stability and improve the health and well-being of senior adults and adults with disabilities through access to healthy and nutritious foods, community education and advocacy.
We envision a community where our senior adults and adults with disabilities have access to nutritious food, understands the consequences of food instability and poor nutrition and is committed to creating a stronger, healthier Hampshire County.
We are a community-based organization focused on helping make the world around us a better, healthier
place. Our food programs are focused on senior adult and adults with disabilities food insecurity. United Health Foundation reported in March of 2018, over 18.5% of adults over age 60 in West Virginia faced the threat of hunger in the past 12 months. Often times seniors living on fixed income and facing rising medical costs have to make choices about food purchases. Matthew's Gift wants to ease that burden and eliminate food insecurity. With the help of our volunteers and community partners we provide free box meals, emergency food bags and senior services information.
Our Breakfast in a Bag program provides a shelf stable, nutritious breakfast that will supplement the daily food intake of seniors. The above picture displays a typical bag breakfast. The contents of the breakfast bag are subject to change based on availability of products and donations.
For the cost of a cup of coffee from your favorite barista, you can provide breakfast for a senior adult.
***FOOD ALLERGEY NOTICE***
Bag meals may contain donated homemade food products prepared in noncommerical licensed kitchens. Please be advised that foods prepared in home kitchens may contain the following: milk, eggs, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
At times, the unexpected happens and an older adult finds the kitchen shelves low on food. Our emergency food bag provides shelf stable food items to supplement the diet of the individual. Contents of each supplemental emergency bag will vary based on availability of donations and organization resources.
Your donation of grocery store gift cards and shelf stable food products will help ensure Matthew's Gift has emergency bags to meet every need.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of those in our community. Your contribution today helps us make a difference.
